Generatie Alpha, de mensen geboren na 2010, wordt naar verwachting de grootste generatie ooit. En zal ook meer impact hebben dan alle voorgaande generaties. “Het is niet alleen een belangrijke doelgroep door de grootte (2 miljard mensen in 2025), maar vooral omdat hun ouders millennials zijn”, aldus Joeri Van den Bergh, NextGen expert bij Human8.
Samen met Transfer deed Human8 onderzoek naar de Alpha’s in Nederland en België. Maar liefst 1200 kinderen tussen de 4 en 14 jaar waren betrokken. Het onderzoek toonde niet alleen aan dat deze Alpha-kinderen 5 specifieke kenmerken hebben, maar ook dat de ouderschapsstijl van hun ouders (voornamelijk millennials) een cruciale rol speelt.
De ouderschapsstijl van millennials
Generatie X stond bekend om het zogeheten free range parenting. Hierbij geef je kinderen veel individuele tijd en zelfstandigheid. Millennials zijn juist weer anders. Joeri: “Ze doen veel meer in samenspraak met hun kinderen, staan meer open voor hun persoonlijke ontwikkeling en laten hierdoor ook meer invloed toe op beslissingen in het gezinsleven. Gen Alpha heeft daardoor een grotere invloed op gezinsaankopen dan eerdere generaties. Niet alleen op kinderproducten, zoals speelgoed of kleding, maar ook op gezinsaankopen als auto’s, vakanties en elektronica.”
5 kenmerken om generatie Alpha te bereiken
Het onderzoek van Human8 en Transfer toonde dus ook aan dat generatie Alpha de volgende kenmerken heeft:
#1 Digital natives: het wordt aan meerdere generaties toegerekend, maar generatie Alpha is écht opgegroeid met de iPad in de hand. 35% heeft zelfs een eigen tablet, 27% een eigen laptop en 50% een eigen telefoon. 9 van de 10 zegt gaming leuk te vinden, 4 van de 10 van de 7+’ers zegt wekelijks Roblox, Minecraft of Fortnite te spelen. Technologie en gaming is dus écht deel van de lifestyle, iets waar merken vaak te weinig mee bezig zijn.
#2 Doel- en zingeving: hieruit blijkt dat generatie Alpha echt mini-millennials zijn: doel- en zingeving omtrent onder andere klimaatverandering, diversiteit en inclusie is een belangrijk onderdeel van de maatschappij. Dit heeft ook invloed op het gezin: 1 op de 4 vraagt zijn of haar ouders om energie te besparen of afval te recycleren.
#3 Mediagebruik: haast iedere respondent gaf aan wekelijks YouTube te gebruiken, net iets meer dan gaming. Reclames op YouTube én op tv zijn belangrijke inspiratiebronnen om producten te leren kennen, bijvoorbeeld voor kerst of Sinterklaas. Daarnaast zegt 40% van de 12- tot 14-jarigen e-commercesites te gebruiken om producten te vragen aan ouders. Generatie Alpha weet deze sites dus te vinden.
#4 Screen bonding: tv-programma’s worden nog steeds bekeken, vooral uitgesteld via streaming. Tv blijft dus belangrijk, mede door het fenomeen screen bonding. Generatie Alpha doet graag dingen samen, net als hun millennial-ouders. Zij zien samen tv kijken dan ook als moment van verbinding. 78% van de ouders kijkt een aantal keer per week naar tv met hun kinderen, waarbij de kinderen vaak bepalen welke programma’s bekeken worden. Generatie X zag schermen als iets negatiefs dat qua schermtijd beperkt moest worden voor hun Gen Z-kroost. Millennials beperken daarentegen niet de schermtijd, maar juist schermcontent. Millennials zien schermen namelijk als iets waar je van kan leren: 6 van de 10 ouders zegt dat gaming goed is voor zijn of haar kinderen. Eerdere generaties dachten hier anders over én het verklaart waarom millennials schermen aan hun kinderen geven op vrij jonge leeftijd.
#5 Ondernemerschap: generatie Alpha heeft sterke interesse in ondernemerschap. 44% heeft een sterke interesse in het starten van een eigen bedrijf. Onder de 12- tot 14-jarigen is dit zelfs 57%. Ondernemerschap is dus belangrijk om op in te spelen, naast dat YouTuber of influencer van een groot deel van de respondenten droombanen zijn.
Gen Alpha effectief bereiken
Human8 heeft bovengenoemde kenmerken nog veel verder onderzocht. Tijdens het congres Kids en Jongeren op 18 juni 2024 geeft Joeri antwoord op onder meer de volgende vragen, geïllustreerd met concrete voorbeelden. Deze voorbeelden zijn niet alleen gebaseerd op het eerdergenoemde onderzoek, maar bevatten ook gloednieuwe analyses uit het voorjaar van 2024.
