9 apocalyptic shows to watch after Fallout on Netflix, Prime, and more (2024)

Up Next

Calling all vault dwellers – the Fallout TV adaptation of the award-winning game series has arrived on Amazon Prime Video.

Based in the world of the post-apocalyptic franchise, the Jonathan Nolan-helmed show follows Vault 33 resident Lucy (Ella Purnell) as she is forced into the irradiated wastes of Los Angeles after her father Hank (Kyle MacLachlan) is kidnapped.

On her journey, she meets Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus (Aaron Moten) and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a bounty hunter and gunslinger who was alive before the Great War. Their paths collide thanks to Wilzig (Michael Emerson), an Enclave member harbouring a dark secret.

The eagerly-anticipated eight-episode series has proved a hit with fans, shooting straight to number one on the streaming platform since its release on Thursday (April 11).

If you’ve survived the feral ghouls, puppy incinerators, radroaches, and everything else the Wasteland has to offer, you’ll be ready for your next binge-watch.

And we have nine series you can find on Prime, Netflix, Disney Plus, and more which see humans surviving the apocalypse in equally creative and gory ways.

You, Me, And The Apocalypse

We start the apocalypse with this hit comedy airing on Now TV and Sky.

In You, Me and The Apocalypse, we follow a diverse group of seemingly unconnected characters as they discover the end of humanity is near with a comet on a collision course to crash into Earth.

Among them are estranged twin brothers Jamie Winton and Ariel Conroy (Matthew Baynton), a chain-smoking Vatican priest (Rob Lowe), and even a maximum security prisoner (Jenna Fischer) who all cope in wildly different ways with their impending doom.

The Purge

Based on the hit horror film series, a TV adaptation of The Purge arrived on our screens in 2018 – and while it isn’t exactly post-apocalyptic, it certainly feels as horrific.

Much like the film series, the show is set in an alternate dystopian United States where once a year there is a 12-hour period which legalizes all crimes, including vandalism, theft, arson, and murder in a bid to cut down crime rates.

The first season follows several characters on the Purge Night of 2027 as their lives intersect, while the second season deals with the aftermath of the annual Purge Night of 2036 as a group investigate conspiracies of that night before the next Purge arrives.

Set 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse wiped out most of humanity on Earth, a group of people from a station in space travel back to Earth as life support systems begin to fail.

When they arrive, they discover that humans were not all killed, and they must learn to live among the ‘Grounders’ in their civilisation.

Chernobyl

Okay, so this isn’t exactly an apocalyptic show, but it also deals with a nuclear disaster – and the fact that it’s based on a true story is all the more spine-chilling.

Released in 2019, Chernobyl tells the story of the real 1986 Chernobyl disaster which saw the devastation explosion of the No. 4 reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in northern Ukraine.

More than 100,000 people were evacuated from affected areas, with the radioactive release said to have been 10 times bigger than the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima.

Dead Set

With the return of Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother, we can only hope for the return ofDead Set.

Set in a fictionalised Big Brother series, the show chronicles a zombie outbreak that strands the housemates and production staff inside the Big Brother House.

The five-episode series, created by Black Mirror mastermind Charlie Brooker, even saw cameos from host Davina McCall as well as former contestants such as Helen Adams, Paul “Bubble” Ferguson, Eugene Sully, Kinga Karolczak, Makosi Musambasi, Saskia Howard-Clarke, Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace, Imogen Thomas, Brian Belo, and Ziggy Lichman.

The Stand

Stephen King’s hit novel The Stand was turned into a TV series in 2021 starring Alexander Skarsgard, Amber Heard, Owen Teague, and Katherine McNamara.

The few survivors left battle to save each other and repopulate the earth, breaking into groups that all have different ideas about how the new society should operate.

War of the Worlds

H. G. Wells terrified the world with the release of his sci-fi novel The War of the Worlds before Orson Welles disturbed a whole new generation with his radio drama that many believed to be real.

The horrifying alien invasion story was adapted for TV in 2019, starring Gabriel Byrne and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The new imagining of the classic tale takes place between Britain and France when astronomers detect a transmission from another star, with intelligent extra-terrestrial beings soon making contact with Earth. But within days, most of mankind is wiped out.

The Last Of Us

When it comes to video game adaptations, The Last Of Us is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed examples.
