After a difficult few years of watching women’s rights rolled back in the U.S. and globally, I feel a sense of urgency about doing more to alter this trajectory. As a first step, I’m committing an additional $1 billion over the next two years to people and organizations working to support the health, wellbeing, and power of women and girls everywhere.Over the past few weeks, I’ve begun directing substantial new grants to organizations doing urgent work to advance women’s power in the U.S. For too long, resource scarcity has forced these organizations into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense. I want to help even the match.I’m also trying new ways to help broaden the circle of decision makers in philanthropy and get resources where they’re most urgently needed. As part of that, I’ve offered 12 leaders I respect a $20 million fund each to distribute to charitable organizations working to improve women’s health and wellbeing anywhere in the world. And later this year, I’ll launch a $250 million global call to identify and fund community-led organizations focused on women’s mental and physical health. For decades, I’ve watched women and girls fight to get on the global agenda. It’s time women and girls set that agenda themselves.

It’s not just about leveling the playing field anymore it’s about bringing humanity back to 50% of the world poplulation that lives in a perpetual cycle of being treated less than, less than a male, less than entitled to equal pay for equal work, less than a leader or founder, less than capable and required in so many cultures to subvert individualality and agency over their own bodies and existence. This investment is so wonderful to see and hopefully amplifies the work that’s being done to preserve, reinstate and create equality for women.

Amazing, and so needed as the rights of Womens are eroding which is terrifying. What can we in general do to help? Could part of this fund be used to create networks across countries/regions globally with the aim of sharing information, providing safe space to learn and debate on these areas, and to empower them in lobbying skills - how to influnce politicians / find and nurture allies etc?

Also, my SLAM, ?Senior Life Advocacy Movement? would benefit so greatly from your help. My mom passed at the neglect of a rehab center we trusted here in a few months for simple muscle therapy she got severe sepsis and tragically, horrifically,died..and they refuse to take accountablility. Just look at the images in my site here.. i am determined to bring more light to the KNOW of these places and SIGNS for senior women and seniors in general.. won't you look at my site and help me get the word out. I cannot do this alone !.. NOBODY seems to take it serious and keeps brushing senior abuse under the rug.. if this were a child it would be all over the news.. well why is a disabled senior mother any less value ?? MY moms life was valuable to her, me and her grand daughter and great grand kids ! and friends ! Guess what. , we are all going to be seniors, is this whats next for YOUR life?https://chiarousa6.wixsite.com/slam

Such amazing work that you will be doing for women globally. We need to ensure we are leaving this world better than it started which includes course-correcting some of the rights that are being threatened at this time and supporting those with the highest need. RBG said it best "Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means don't do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived."

In an interview from earlier this spring, Brian Sozzi of Yahoo Finance asked me about the core values that guide my work. My answer, which can be traced back to what my parents and teachers taught me as a kid, is that I believe we’re all here to lift up those around us. Ultimately, I want everyone—especially those who have been left behind or excluded—to have the resources and opportunities they need to live the life they want. Listen to the full interview:

“All I want is for girls to live in an equal and safe society…is that too much to ask?” I love this sentiment from Memory Banda, an activist I met in Malawi last year who’s leading heroic efforts to prevent child marriage. Building women’s political power not only strengthens democracy; it’s good for business, too. Thank you, Leadership Now Project, for inviting me to talk about the important role women play—as voters, candidates, and elected officials—in making our government more representative of the people it serves.

I couldn’t be more inspired by Break Through Tech’s efforts to help computing students from underrepresented backgrounds jumpstart their careers in tech. Their AI program is such a powerful example of what’s possible when young people have opportunities to explore their interests, learn new skills, and get hands-on experience. I’m proud to support their work through Pivotal Ventures.

After careful thought and reflection, I have decided to resign from my role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. My last day of work at the foundation will be June 7th.This is not a decision I came to lightly. I am immensely proud of the foundation that Bill and I built together and of the extraordinary work it is doing to address inequities around the world. I care deeply about the foundation team, our partners around the world, and everyone who is touched by its work.I am taking this step with full confidence that the foundation is in strong shape, with its extremely capable CEO Mark Suzman, the Executive Leadership Team, and an experienced board of trustees in place to ensure all its important work continues. The time is right for me to move forward into the next chapter of my philanthropy. This is a critical moment for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world—and those fighting to protect and advance equality are in urgent need of support. Under the terms of my agreement with Bill, in leaving the foundation, I will have an additional $12.5 billion to commit to my work on behalf of women and families. I’ll be sharing more about what that will look like in the near future.

For far too long, women and people of color in the United States have been forced to navigate systems that weren’t built with them in mind. This not only holds them back—it holds our entire country back from the progress we’re capable of.I founded Pivotal Ventures in 2015 to get more power in the hands of more people, especially women, by removing the barriers that stand in their way. Ultimately, I want to see more women of all backgrounds in positions where they can make decisions, control resources, and shape policies and perspectives in every sector of society. They belong there, and we need them there. Learn more about Pivotal Ventures’ work: PivotalVentures.org

This The Seattle Times story is yet another heartbreaking reminder of why #CareCantWait. Parents shouldn’t be forced to give up their jobs, go into debt, or sit on months-long waitlists in order to give their kids the care they need. Our country must do more to address this crisis so that all parents have affordable, timely child care options.

In WA and beyond, a child care crisis is holding parents back seattletimes.com
