What is the highest quality cashmere? ›

Grade A: The highest quality cashmere as the fibres will both be the longest and finest. The diameter of the fibres can be as low as 14-15.5 microns, with a length of 34- 36mm.

Quality cashmere is not only the finest, softest and warmest yarn, but it is also a very durable product, which can easily last 10 years and over 200 wears when taken care of properly.

Cashmere and wool are always prone to pilling – this is nothing to do with the quality of the product, but more to do with wearing it. And if you love it, you'll wear it often! Pilling is a natural process caused when the fibres in the yarn rub against each other and form small balls.

There is also some traditional difference in how cashmere is knitted. For example, Scottish knitwear usually has less of a finish (less fluffy) than Italian. With the former you can usually see the yarn more clearly.

Cashmere of high quality retains its shape after being stretched. So if your cashmere stays stretched after you pull it, it may not be pure. The Look Test: With a sharp eye, and maybe some help from a magnifying glass, you can analyze the structure of cashmere fabric. High-quality cashmere has a very tight structure.

Yak wool, AKA “khullu” is not only a cashmere alternative because it's similarly soft and comfy to wear all the time. Khullu is also considered an alternative because it's more sustainable, breathable, durable, and warmer than cashmere.

Can cashmere even get any softer? Incredibly, the answer is yes–but it's best to let that happen naturally over time.

We recommend you gently wash your Cashmere knitwear after you have worn it three or four times. You will find specific washing instructions for each product on the care label sewn inside the garment. Hand-wash the item in lukewarm water (35°), using Johnstons of Elgin Cashmere Shampoo or a similar mild detergent.

Cashmere pills are caused by the tangeling of top hairs on cashmere. Low-quality cashmere is especially prone to pilling, as it is composed of mostly short fibers. High-quality cashmere products, such as those found at the Cashmere Shop will not pill excessively when properly cared for.

Much of the best cashmere for sweaters comes from Mongolia and Inner Mongolia, where cashmere goats survive in harsh, high-altitude landscapes.
