The seeds for tonight's concert were planted last year, when Hoke was invited by a friend, Barbara Evenchick, to host a fund-raising dinner for the Ohio Chamber Orchestra at his home. Music director Lockington, a fine cellist, and orchestra colleagues were there to play chamber music. After dessert, Hoke asked Lockington if he would like "to play a couple of tunes with He was in a bit of a state of shock. My son is a cellist, so we had tunes. We gave a 15- to 20-minute impromptu concert.

It was truly a moment, sort of the thing that is very magical." If it's on your mind it is in everywoman. chestra sometime later asking if he would like to appear as soloist at a benefit concert.

The congressman had studied the Gershwin as a young pianist, and he was tickled when the orchestra suggested the Mozart. Hoke said he agreed to do the concert partly because Lockington and the orchestra's board had been looking for a way to bring attention to the ensemble on the West Side and increase its audience. The concert is bound to bring Hoke a different kind of attention than he has received of late. His remark last year about a Washington TV producer's breasts was picked up by an open microphone and caused quite a stir. Other statements have landed him in hot water.

At this point, even Hoke admits he's more confident sitting at a keyboard than, well, opening his mouth. "Frankly, I wish I could speak in public as well as I play the piano," he said. "There are some great orators here in the House on both sides, and I hope someday I'll be able to speak much better than I do now." Asked if he's nervous about tonight's event, Hoke said, "I feel good. I know what you have to do to prepare yourself for this. There is no substitute for practice." And now that he's re-entering the solo arena, what's next? "Perhaps this will be an audition for a performance with the Cleveland Orchestra," said Hoke, without a trace of irony.

"I would love to play the Gershwin at Blossom on a July 4 concert. That would be a real kick." For your Information The Ohio Chamber Orchestra performs a benefit concert at 8 tonight at Cuyahoga Community Western Campus, 11000 W. Pleasant Valley Parma. Tickets: $50, patrons (includes preferred seating and postconcert reception with Congressman Hoke); $15, general admission. Call 464-1755.
