Biden showed true leadership in Oval Office address - Harris

Kamala Harris has just addressed a major teachers' union in Houston.

It is the vice president's fourth event in four days in four states.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is a powerful union that rapidly endorsed Ms Harris for president this week, the first union to do so.

Ms Harris started her address by discussing Joe Biden's Oval Office speech last night, saying it showed "what true leadership looked like".

She thanked the president for leading the nation with "grace and strength and bold vision and deep compassion."

She also thanked the AFT for its support over the years, telling the crowd she is the "proud product of public education".

The vice president received a huge roar of approval from the crowd of teachers and union members when she says: "We want to ban assault weapons and they [Republicans] want to ban books. Can you imagine?"

Ms Harris also got a big cheer when she promised to sign the Protecting the Right to Organise Act, known as the PRO Act, into law.

The act would amend decades-old labour laws to give workers more power during disputes at work. It is currently stalled in Congress.

Kamala Harris condemns 'despicable' acts from Washington protesters

Kamala Harris has released a statement following yesterday's protests in Washington.

Demonstrators in the capital tore down and burned American flags in response to US leaders inviting Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress.

She said: "Yesterday, at Union Station in Washington DC, we saw despicable actsbyunpatriotic protestors and dangerous hate-fuelled rhetoric.

"I condemn any individuals associating with the brutal terrorist organization Hamas, which has vowed to annihilate the State of Israel and kill Jews.

"Pro-Hamas graffiti and rhetoric is abhorrent, and we must not tolerate it in our nation.

"I condemn the burning of the American flag. That flag is a symbol of our highest ideals as a nation and represents the promise of America.

"It should never be desecrated in that way.I support the right to peacefully protest, but let’s be clear:Antisemitism, hate and violence of any kindhaveno place in our nation."

Mr Netanyahu addressed the protesters during his address to Congress, labelling them "Iran's useful idiots".

He also called on America to fast track military aid to Israel to help them "finish the job faster".

Speaker hits out at 'terrorist mob' during aftermath of Washington protests

The speaker of the House has condemned what he called the "terrorist mob" that lit an American flag on fire during yesterday's protests in Washington.

Demonstrators tore down the flag outside Union Station and set it alight along with an effigy of Benjamin Netanyahu, who was addressing Congress yesterday.

Thousands of gatherers, who Mr Netanyahu labelled as "Iran's useful idiots", were angry with US leaders for inviting the Israeli prime minister to Washington.

Mr Netanyahu is facing both international and domestic pressure for his handling of the war, with the International Criminal Court issuing an arrest warrant for Israel's leader over alleged war crimes.

Speaker Mike Johnson joined a group of House Republicans to say the pledge of allegiance after replacing American flags that were taken down by protesters.

"Tonight, we righted their wrong," he said on X.

"American flags are once again flying over Union Station. We will not let the terrorist mob win."

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries also condemned the flag burning in a statement.

He said: "There is a difference between lawful expression and disorderly conduct. Anyone who violates the law must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

Elsewhere, National Park Service workers have been busy trying to remove pro-Palestinian graffiti in Washington.

Analysis: Israeli leader's fiery speech on the biggest stage was a political risk

By Cordelia Lynch, international correspondent in Washington

Benjamin Netanyahu preached about unity but his presence in Washington stirred a firestorm, exposing deep division among Democrats and providing an awkward and delicate test for a party desperately trying to look like they agree with each other.

The speech from Israel’s leader was fiery, combative and showed little sign of any shift in policy.

Speaking to frequent applause in the chamber, he vowed “total victory in Gaza”, warned about the threat from Iran and managed to denounce US protestors in the same breath as calling on America to speed up its military support.

It was a confident, unapologetic performance with no concessions.

Mr Netanyahu wants to reshape his image internationally and the US took the political risk of giving him their biggest stage to perform on at a deeply turbulent time in the country.

Harris to reiterate concerns of humanitarian situation in Gaza with Netanyahu

This from our US partner network NBC News...

Through her meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kamala Harris will continue her intensive engagement on the conflict in Gaza.

We anticipate she will underscore her commitment to ensuring Israel can defend itself from threats from Iran and Iranian-backed militias, including Hezbollah and Hamas.

She will again condemn Hamas's brutal attack on 7 October.

She will reiterate her deep concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the loss of innocent life.

We anticipate the vice president will convey her view that it is time for the war to end in a way where Israel is secure, all hostages are released, the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can enjoy their right to dignity, freedom, and self-determination.

And they will discuss efforts to reach agreement on the ceasefire deal.

Harris speaking to teachers' union today

Kamala Harris is propelling her presidential push by speaking to the American Federation of Teachers today.

Ms Harris's appearance at the teachers' convention in Houston follows a rally this Tuesday in Milwaukee and a speech yesterday to a gathering of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta in Indianapolis.

Having emerged as the likely Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden quit the race, Ms Harris intends to travel widely to spread her message and rally voters.

But just as she is trying to draw a contrast with Donald Trump, he is working to do the same with her.

Mr Trump went on the offensive at a rally yesterday in North Carolina, calling Ms Harris a "real liberal" who is "much worse" than Mr Biden.

Trump says Musk never told him about any $45m donation

Donald Trump has said Elon Musk never told him that he planned to give $45m for his campaign.

The former president, who made the comments in an interview with Fox News, also called for a quick end to the war between Israel and Hamas and the return of the hostages, adding that Israel has to better manage its "public relations".

The former president alsocriticised those who protested the Israeli prime minister's speech to the US Congress, calling for a one-year jail sentence for desecrating the US flag.

For context: Yesterday, the Tesla chief denied reports that he was planning to donate $45m a month to a new pro-Trump super political-action committee.

The Tesla boss wrote on X that the reports that emerged last week were "ridiculous".

He made the comments after the Wall Street Journal reported that the billionaire planned to commit around $45m a month to a PAC backing Trump.

Nancy Pelosi says Harris 'capable' to lead country

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is speaking at a news conference in Washington.

She says the US "continues to be blessed" with the leadership of Joe Biden.

Referring to Mr Biden's speech yesterday, she says he "passed the torch" with "eloquence and vision".

She says she has known Kamala Harris for decades and she is about "strength and determination".

"She is a person of deep faith and commitment to public service in the most unselfish way," she says.

"Make no mistake this is a politically astute president."

Ms Pelosi says Ms Harris is "capable officially, personally and politically to lead us in November".

She goes on to say when Ms Harris announced she was running, around a million people gave an average of $100m and these were "small donors".

"He [Trump] is sitting at the table with big oil saying you give me $100m and I will give you $1bn in tax breaks," she adds.

"It's all over. It's all over what's your name!

"That's not how Washington should be run."
