Yarn Options

Generally, I like crocheting bucket hats with 100% cotton yarns. But this time, I decided to try out a couple cotton blend and acrylic options. And let me tell you! I am so glad I did. I absolutely love the result.

Yarn Option #1:

For the larger granny square bucket hat, I used a yarn called Cotton-Ease by Lion Brand for the Large Adult hat. Which is a worsted weight (#4), with fiber content 60% Cotton / 40% Acrylic. This yarn has been discontinued butMade With Love The Cotton One by the same brand is a perfect substitute.

Amount needed:

Color 1: Alabaster (light color)– You’ll need approximately 1.87 oz (53 g), or 99 yds (91 m).

Color 2: Indigo (dark color)– You’ll need approximately 2.39 oz (68 g), or 126 yds (115 m).

Yarn Option #2:

I used Jeans Yarn by Lion Brand for the smaller granny square bucket hat (Teen/Small Adult size). Which is a worsted weight (#4) with fiber content 100% Acrylic. This yarn is so soft and makes a super cool denim style bucket hat.

Amount needed:

Color 1: Classic (dark denim blue)–You’ll need approximately 1.63 oz (46 g), or 115 yds (105 m).

Color 2: Top Stitch– You’ll need approximately 1.36 oz (39 g), or 96 yds (88 m).

In addition to the crochet basics, such as chain (ch), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), and slip stitch),you’ll need these other skills:

  • Puff stitch with 3 half double crochet stitches (3hdcps):(Yarn over, insert the hook in stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop) 3 times. Yarn over and pull through 7 loops to complete the stitch.

Measurements

Instructions are the same for sizes Small Adult/Teen (21″ to 22″ heads) and Large Adult (23″ to 24″ heads). You’ll need to use a different hook size and meet gauge for each of the two hat sizes.

  • The Small Adult/Teen hat’s circumference will be approximately21” (53.5 cm) and 8” (20 cm) tall.
  • As for the Large Adult, it will be approximately23” (58.5 CM) and 9” (23 cm) tall.

Instructions

We’ll have 2 puff stitches variations in this granny square bucket hat pattern. Before you start making the hat, see “special stitches” section above for the written instructions on how to create the puff stitches.

Step 1: Crown

Work with your choices of yarn colors, changing it in every round for both the crown and the side squares.

Important:Make sure you check size and gauge sections so you will know what to expect about sizes.

Make 1 pentagon for the crown. Start with a mc, ch 2 (doesn’t count as a st).

R1:20 dc in the mc, sl st to join.

R2:(3hdcps, ch 1) around [20 3hdcps and 16 ch 1 sps]

R3: (4hdcps, ch 1) around [20 4hdcps and 16 ch 1 sps]

R4:ch 4, dc cluster in same sp as ch 4, dc cluster in each of next 3 ch 1 sps, *(dc cluster, ch 1, dc cluster) in next ch 1 sp, dc cluster in each of next 3 ch 1 sps, rep from the asterisk 3 more times, dc cluster in same sp as initial ch 4.

Step 2: Body of the hat

Make 5 squares, one at a time, separately. Start with a mc, ch 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch).

R1:16 dc in the mc, sl st to join.

R2:(3hdcps, ch 1) around [16 3hdcps and 16 ch 1 sps]

R3:(4hdcps, ch 1) around [16 4hdcps and 16 ch 1 sps]

R4:ch 5, tr cluster in same sp as ch 4, dc cluster in each of next 3 ch 1 sps, *(tr cluster, ch 1, tr cluster) in next ch 1 sp, dc cluster in each of next 3 ch 1 sps, rep from the asterisk 2 more times, tr cluster in same sp as initial ch 4.

Tip:At round 3, the squares may feel tight and like it’s going to bowl. That’s totally normal, they will straighten up when you finish round 4.

Step 3: Assemble the crown

Assemble the crown (pentagon) and the squares together to build up your granny square bucket hat with sc sts.

  1. First, match one side of one of the squares with one side of the pentagon, wrong side facing wrong side. Keep the right side of the square facing you.
  2. Next, attach the yarn to both layers of the first stitch in one of the corners of both the pentagon and the square.
  3. Then, sc in next 15 stitches, sc in next corner with a corner of a new square.
  4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the remaining squares without cutting the yarn. Sl st to join. Do no cut the yarn.

Step 4: Assemble the sides

Now, you are going to do the same with the 5 sides of the squares that forms the “bucket” of yourgranny square bucket hat.

Continue from where stopped with the uncut yarn.

  1. Single crochet in next 15 stitches (grabbing both square stitch layers) to seam the first two squares together, single crochet in next corner. FO. Cut the yarn.
  2. Attach the yarn to the stitch close to the crown and repeat step 1 in next 4 square sides, one at a time.

Tip:at this point, you have a “bucket” that should be long enough to be right above the top of your ears. If you need your granny square bucket hat to be longer, add one or two extra hdc rounds of 80 sts, in next step before increasing for the brim.

Step 5: Brim

Attach the same yarn color you used to assemble the squares to crochet the first round. Then, alternate with the yarn color used for round 4 of the squares for the remaining rounds.

Tip: When changing yarn colors on the brim, there’s no need to cut the yarn. Just drop it and pick it back up in next round.

R1:hdc around doing hdc2tog in each of the two the square corner joints [80]

Continue to sc around in continuous rounds, without joining.

R2:(sc inc, sc in next 15 sts) 5 times [85]

R3:(sc inc, sc in next 16 sts) 5 times [90]

R4:(sc inc, sc in next 17 sts) 5 times [95]

R5:(sc inc, sc in next 18 sts) 5 times [100]

R6:(sc inc, sc in next 19 sts) 5 times [105]

R7:(sc inc, sc in next 20 sts) 5 times [110]

R8-12:sc around [110]

This is a good time to add more plain rounds to make your brim longer if you like. Or make it shorter by subtracting rounds. Your choice.

Granny Square Bucket Hat FAQs?

Are granny square bucket hats easy?

Yes. This hat is simple to crochet and will make a great first time color change project. But if you’re new to sunburst crochet squares, make sure you are comfortable with some advanced techniques. Such as, puff stitches and color change.

Can this hat be smaller?

It depends! If you’re are okay with doing some math, you can give it a try. Crochet a square using lighter yarn and/or a smaller crochet hook. Then, measure one side of the square and multiply by 5. The result should be equal or about 1 to 2 inches smaller than the head circumference.

What yarns are best for a granny square bucket hat?

Normally, lighter weight cotton or cotton blends are best for hats that will be worn in the warmer seasons. But good quality acrylic yarns can be a great option as well. The denim hat pictured in this pattern was made with 100% acrylic yarn.

How many granny squares are needed for a bucket hat?

You will need one pentagon for crown and 5 granny squares for the body of the hat. Once you have the pentagon and squares done, will then assemble the hat with single crochet stitches and crochet the brim.
