Penny Scarf - Free Crochet Pattern (2024)

Learn how to make a bobble and lace scarf with the free Penny scarf crochet pattern. This is my absolute favorite so far, and I can't wait for the weather to get a little colder so I can wrap it around my neck. The pretty pink will look perfect with anything denim! Of course, you can make it any color you like.

Penny Scarf Crochet Pattern Tutorial

Supplies

  • Yarn: Worsted Weight Yarn (10ply) 330m/360y
  • Crochet hook: 5mm or size to obtain gauge.
  • Tapestry needle: For weaving ends.

I used an Australian yarn called 4 Seasons Half and Half. It is made by Spotlight and is a wool/acrylic mix. Any worsted-weight yarn will work for this crochet pattern.

This scarf would look lovely using a variegated color yarn.

Skill Level

Intermediate. While this pattern does not have tricky stitches, it has more steps than some of the simpler scarf patterns.

Gauge and Size

13 st and 14 rows with sc with a 5mm (H-8) hook. However, gauge is not important when crocheting a scarf. The finished scarf after blocking has a size of 6.5” by 65” (16.5x165cm) (not including fringe).

Abbreviations

Pattern written in US terms.

  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet stitch
  • ch = chain stitch
  • sp = space
  • sk = skip
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st/sts =stitch/ stitches

Special Stitch – Bobble Stitch

The bobble stitch gives the little balls on the top of the scarf. If you can do a double crochet then this stitch should be no problem.

  1. Yarn over, insert hook, pull through. Yarn over and pull through 2 (2 loops.)
  2. In the same stitch, yarn over, insert a hook and pull through. Yarn over and pull through 2 (3 loops).
  3. Repeat 3 more times until you have 6 loops on stitch.
  4. Yarn over and pull through 6.

Adding the Fringe

  1. Cut 6 pieces of yarn 12 inches (30cm) long. (Cut more if you want thicker tassels)
  2. Fold them in half, creating a loop at the folded end. Insert your crochet hook from back to front through the first shell cluster on the end.
  3. Hook the yarn loop with your crochet hook and pull it halfway through.
  4. Open the loop with your fingers, then pull the loose ends of the yarn strands through the loop. Pull tight to secure the fringe in place.
  5. Repeat for next 5 fringes. Each fringe will be inserted into the shell cluster on the end. Trim the fringe evenly.
